Help shape future of Michigan potato research

The Potato Growers of Michigan, Inc. (PGMI) is taking a bold step to safeguard and advance potato research and the potato industry in Michigan by establishing a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF). This initiative, sparked by discussions at the Rooted in Progress Summit, will provide an independent, grower-driven funding source to support critical research efforts. To bring this vision to life, we need your help!

Why This Fund Matters

The purpose of this DAF is to:

  • Preserve Research Integrity & Intellectual Property — Ensure long-term support for Michigan State University’s potato breeding program, particularly as key researchers transition.
  • Enhance Research Infrastructure — Invest in facilities and protocols that replicate real-world growing conditions, delivering practical solutions to growers.
  • Fund Problem-Oriented Research — Focus on industry-specific challenges and generate actionable results for Michigan’s potato growers.

By partnering with an Area Community Foundation, we are establishing a sustainable fund that will foster innovation without government constraints. A DAF offers the advantages of a standalone foundation — tax-free growth and flexible contributions — without the burden of high administrative costs.

Seeking Volunteers: Join the Committee

To ensure the success of this initiative, PGMI is forming a committee to flesh out the details of the fund’s structure, branding, and outreach. We invite growers, industry stakeholders, and research advocates to join us in shaping the future of this fund.

Key Considerations:

  • Fund Name: Should it be a fund name, or another tribute to a respected industry leader?
  • Branding & Recognition: While the fund will be housed under PGMI’s umbrella, should it have its own logo for identity and promotion?
  • Outreach Strategy: Communications will be integrated into PGMI’s existing channels, including their website and newsletter — how can we best engage potential donors?
  • Three-Year Roadmap: Help define the strategy for securing initial contributions, building donor engagement, and creating a long-term giving model.
